- 발표 : Imaginations of a democratic society: African and Asian cases
- 개요 : It may be fruitful to consider democracy not as an established model or a fully-fledged idea but as always contested, changing, and under threat. This is the assumption of the research programme “Contested Democracy” of the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research. In the seminar I will introduce the Contested Democracy Programme and sketch the aims of my own sub-project in it called “Democratic Imaginations in a Global Context: Liberal Democracy and its Contenders”. The project aims at describing and analysing a few interesting cases of deviant political imagination in Africa and Asia .
Democracy has become the master-term in most official and oppositional discourses about politics. Yet, we observe discontent about democratic politics in many parts of the world. This discontent could raise the question of how people then imagine democracy. What different imaginations of democratic society can be identified? What is the ‘ideoscape’ of democracy ? – to use a term of Arjun Appadurai. The presentation proposes four key dimensions for analysing democratic imaginations and it will discuss a few examples from and from Africa . In the discussion session these same questions concerning diverse trends of democratic imagination may be applied to Korean social and intellectual history.
